Knowledge workers face an uncomfortable truth: anyone can now ask ChatGPT the same questions they once needed experts to answer. This creates immediate pressure on the value of expertise. But it also reveals something about how we’ve been thinking about AI in professional practice. We’ve been thinking about it wrong.
The instinct is to treat AI as an oracle—ask it questions, get answers. But you can’t verify an oracle’s answers without possessing the expertise to produce those answers yourself. That’s the verification paradox, and it makes professional accountability impossible when AI operates in this pattern.
The alternative is assistant pattern: AI that does work for experts rather than instead of them. Instead of asking AI for answers, we ask it to translate expert intent into executable code. The code is the artifact we verify. The results are what we deliver.
I call this pattern Executable Knowledge Architecture (EKA). It rests on a simple foundation: knowledge is the capability to reliably produce outcomes. This makes human-AI collaboration coherent. The expert has one kind of capability (specifying intent, verifying alignment). The AI has another (producing executable implementations). Neither constitutes complete knowledge alone. Together, through a verification loop, they produce validated solutions.
The Problem with AI as Oracle
Oracle pattern exists on a spectrum. At one end is weak oracle: ask a question, get a confident answer, no dialogue. At the other end is strong oracle: real conversation, clarifying questions, probed assumptions, structured synthesis at the end.
Strong oracle is better. The dialogue reveals context. The assumptions become more explicit. The output is more relevant to your specific situation.
But the critical insight: strong oracle doesn’t solve the governance problem. It just makes the problem less obvious.
Even at the strong end of the spectrum—with thorough dialogue, retrieval-augmented generation, citations, and all the tooling that modern AI systems provide—you still inherit several critical problems.
First, there’s no audit trail. The AI’s reasoning is opaque. Its sources are unverifiable. Its methodology is uninspectable. If someone asks how you arrived at a conclusion, “the AI said so” is not a defensible answer—regardless of how thorough your conversation was.
Second, there’s no reproducibility. Ask the same question twice and you may get different answers. Run the same analysis next quarter and you cannot guarantee consistency. This makes ongoing work problematic and periodic reporting unreliable.
Third, you face the verification paradox—the structural problem that makes oracle pattern ungovernable for professional work. You cannot verify an AI’s direct answer without possessing the expertise to produce that answer yourself.
This paradox sits at the heart of AI governance in any professional context. And it explains why organizations still need experts even as information becomes commoditized.
The Shift to Assistant Pattern
EKA solves these problems by changing what we ask AI to do. Instead of asking AI to provide answers, we ask it to translate expert intent into executable code.
The workflow has five steps:
Expert describes the analysis in professional language. You articulate what you want to examine, what methodology you want to apply, what comparisons you want to make. You use your domain expertise to frame the problem.
AI translates to executable code. The AI’s job is translation, not revelation. It produces code that can compute the answer.
Expert reviews and approves the code. The crucial insight: reviewing code that produces testable outputs is a fundamentally different task than verifying a direct answer. This is the understanding asymmetry that makes assistant pattern work—you can understand a method without being able to invent it. You can inspect the methodology. You can test edge cases. You can verify the logic without having to reproduce the entire analysis.
Code executes deterministically. Once approved, the code runs. It produces the same output every time given the same input. The stochastic element has been removed from the execution path.
Results are reproducible and auditable. Every deliverable traces back to inspectable code. Every conclusion can be re-derived. Every methodology can be examined.
Stochastic Form, Deterministic Function
An insight underlies this approach: large language models are stochastic in form but deterministic in function.
Ask an LLM to write code that calculates a weighted average, and it might structure the code differently each time. Variable names may vary. Implementation details may shift. The form is stochastic.
But the function is deterministic. A weighted average is a weighted average, regardless of whether the variable is called result or weighted_sum.
The strawberry test illustrates this clearly. Ask an LLM “how many r’s are in strawberry?” and it often answers incorrectly—two instead of three. The direct answer is unreliable. But ask it to write code that counts the r’s, and the code will output 3 every time. The code might use a list comprehension or a for loop or the count() method. The form varies. The output doesn’t.
This is the core insight EKA exploits. We route around the LLM’s unreliable direct answers by asking for code instead. The code’s form may vary, but its function is deterministic. The expert’s review ensures the function matches intent. The code’s execution ensures reproducible results.
Closing the Governance Gap
AI’s accessibility creates a governance gap in professional practice. Anyone can access information directly, which pressures the value of pure information delivery. But this same accessibility increases the value of two things people cannot get from AI directly: accountability and verification.
Organizations don’t just need answers. They need answers they can trust. Answers they can defend. Answers with someone standing behind them. They need methodology they can explain to regulators, auditors, boards, and stakeholders.
EKA addresses this gap by making AI’s contribution explicit and inspectable. The AI didn’t produce the answer. It produced the code that produced the answer. The expert validated that code. The methodology is on record. The verification boundary is clear.
This represents an actual reallocation of responsibility that matches actual value creation. The expert’s judgment is preserved in the methodology. The AI’s contribution is translation, not analysis.
Front-Door Invariants
Implementing EKA requires establishing what I call front-door invariants. These are conditions that must hold for any deliverable that leaves your organization:
Every AI-generated deliverable has code provenance. You can trace any output back to the code that produced it.
Methodology is inspectable. Stakeholders, regulators, or future analysts can examine how results were derived.
Results are reproducible. Running the same code on the same data produces the same output.
Expert judgment is preserved in the methodology, not delegated to AI. The expert decides what to analyze and how. The AI translates that decision into execution.
These invariants distinguish AI-augmented professional work from AI-generated content. They preserve the elements of expertise that justify professional accountability.
Practical Implementation
Adopting EKA doesn’t require rebuilding your organization. Start with work that already has a computational component: financial modeling, data analysis, engineering calculations, research methodology, diagnostic protocols, legal document analysis, risk assessment. These are natural fits for the pattern.
Train your team to think of AI as a translator, not an oracle. The prompt isn’t “what is the answer?” The prompt is “produce an executable artifact that computes the answer given this methodology.” Code is the most common form, but the principle extends to any artifact where the methodology is exposed and the output is reproducible.
The goal is method-bearing artifacts—outputs where the methodology is inspectable, not hidden. When methodology is exposed, verification becomes possible. When verification is possible, defensibility follows.
Your experts need to validate that the artifact implements their intent. They don’t need to be software engineers. They don’t even need to read code. Adversarial review uses the same AI that generated the artifact to explain what it does: “What exactly does this code do?” “What could go wrong?” “What assumptions does this make?” The AI has no memory of having written it and no ego invested in defending it. The expert confirms the description matches their intent—a judgment they’re equipped to make.
Build your artifact repository. Every executable artifact that produces a deliverable should be version-controlled, documented, and retrievable. This is your audit trail and your methodology library. It’s also how you build the empirical track record that capability governance requires for high-stakes work.
The Verification Boundary
EKA uses unreliable AI to produce reliable artifacts. The key is the verification boundary.
AI sits on one side of that boundary, contributing translation capability. Human expertise sits on the other side, contributing judgment, methodology, and accountability. The code is the boundary itself. Inspectable. Testable. Deterministic.
I’d push back on framing this as limiting AI or protecting professional turf. It’s about deploying AI where it adds value while maintaining the governance structures that professional work requires. It’s about building AI-augmented practices that are more capable, more transparent, and more defensible than either human-only or AI-only alternatives.
The organizations that figure this out will define the next era of knowledge work. This pattern works now, with current tools, for any practice willing to reorganize around verification rather than revelation.
